SAFFRON AND WEIGHT LOSS
Saffron extract is a natural supplement made from the saffron crocus. The dried stigmas, threadlike parts of the flower, are used to make saffron spice. Saffron has been used to help alleviate a number of health problems such as asthma, cough, sleep problems, hardening of the arteries, intestinal gas, depression and heartburn. It has also been used as an aphrodisiac. Saffron has been used in traditional Persian medicine for centuries as a treatment for insomnia and anxiety. Saffron has also been found to reduce appetite.
A historic 2010 study conclusively demonstrated that the neurochemical processes behind compulsive eating and drug addiction are identical, suggesting a neurological intervention for appetite control. A proprietary extract of saffron has been shown to safely and effectively reduce the impulses behind uncontrolled “between-meal” snacking. Scientists believe it works primarily by boosting levels of serotonin, reducing the depression, anxiety, and stress central to compulsive eating. By targeting the neurochemistry at the root of compulsive eating behavior, saffron extract serves as a safe, natural way to reduce caloric intake and induce weight loss.
According to a study in Whole Foods Magazine, 100 percent of women who took a saffron extract reported a decrease in hunger. This saffron extract is thought to help remove the urge to compulsively eat, resulting in less snacking or eating when you are not hungry.
Dr. Oz, of the nationally syndicated Dr. Oz show, conducted his own experiment with two self-proclaimed emotional eaters. Both women used saffron during a weekend and did not otherwise alter their diets. One participant lost three pounds in three days while the other lost five in three days. Both said they felt less hungry and didn't have as much of an urge to snack.
